Awards
The Economic Society of Australia offers four awards at the national level; these are the Distinguished Fellow Award, The Honorary Fellow Award, the Young Economist Award, and commencing in 2014 the Distinguished Public Policy Fellow Award
The Distinguished Fellow Award was created in 1985 to honour distinguished Australian economists for their contribution to the development of economics. The Honorary Fellow Award was created in 2005 to honour members of the Society for their significant contribution to the Society. The Young Economist Award was created in 2006 to honour Australian economists under the age of forty who are deemed to have made a significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge. The Distinguished Public Policy Fellow Award has been introduced in 2014 to honour distinguished Australian economists for their contribution to public debate on policy issues.
In addition to these national awards, several state branches confer awards which recognize high achieving students at some of Australia’s top Universities. Visit the individual state sites for more information.
Student Awards
Each year ESA WA awards prizes to Students from each of the Universities for excelling in economics subjects.
Austin Holmes Awards
It “is made to a person who is judged to have made a substantial contribution to economics in WA over their career or who have made a significant innovative contribution to the economics profession in the past year.”
Distinguished Fellow Award
The purpose of this award is to honour distinguished Australian economists for their contribution to the development of economics. Criteria eligibility is to be based upon the candidates contribution to the development of economics as a discipline or profession. Recipients of the Award are expected to be living when annual nominations close. The Award to be announced and presented at the Annual Conference whenever possible. The Award is to be accompanied by a citation and the citation is to be published in an appropriate issue of the Economic Record.
Honorary Fellow Award
This award is to honour members of the Society for their significant and substantial contribution to the Society. The eligibility criterion is ‘contribution to the Economic Society of Australia in relation to its stipulated goals’. Nominations for this prestigious award can be made by any member of the Central Council of the Economic Society of Australia. The Award is to be announced and presented at the next Australian Conference of Economists, whenever possible.
Young Economist Award
To honour that Australian economist under the age of forty who is deemed to have made a significant contribution to one or more of economic thought, economic knowledge, and the application of economics to public policy and public debate.
Distinguished Public Policy Fellow Award
To honour distinguished Australian economists for their contribution to the application of economics to public policy.
