The Shann Memorial Lecture has been running annually since 1963 and was introduced to honour the memory of the Foundation Chair of Economics and History at UWA, Edward Shann. Edward Shann has been regarded as the pioneer of the academic development of economics and traditional Australian economic history and he was a strong advocate of individual intellectual freedom and developing a sense of social responsibilities. He penned several books and essays on the economic history of Australia and was a major influence in formulating financial and fiscal policies in Australia.

With inflation at its highest levels in 30 years, and interest rates rising sharply in response, monetary policy is one of the hottest topics in economics. Is the current outburst of inflation different to past periods of rapidly rising prices; and if so, what policies do we need to address it? What are the social consequences of rising living costs and interest rates, especially in a housing and rental market many experts say is in “crisis”? How well (or badly) has the Reserve Bank of Australia handled monetary policy, and will the recommendations of the recent independent review of the Bank improve its transparency and decision making?
In this forum, the speakers will address some of these questions before a general panel discussion on inflation and the reserve bank.

In Australia economics was once a popular subject choice in school. This is no longer the case, in large part because of a preference for business studies. The latter is considered easier to teach (fewer concepts, more resources). There is also a perception that if offers employment opportunities. A particular challenge facing the economics’ discipline (and affecting enrolments) is the lack of an agreed understanding concerning what economists do and what skills they possess. Relatedly, what is economic literacy?
