Chief Economist
The purpose of this role is to position Western Australia as a premier destination for business, while advancing CCIWA’s mission to champion business interests and promote free enterprise. This leadership role is central to shaping and advocating for policy positions that benefit both the WA business sector and the wider community. As a key driver of CCIWA’s profile, influence, and reputation across WA and nationally, the position encompasses responsibility for guiding the organisation’s advocacy efforts and providing robust economic analysis to support the state’s economic growth and members’ success.
The role is charged with formulating a policy agenda on behalf of the business community and advancing this agenda through strategic media and government engagement. Serving as Chief Economist, this leader represents CCIWA in the media across radio, television, and digital platforms amplifying the organisation’s voice on critical issues. Through these efforts, the role ensures CCIWA’s advocacy is impactful, its profile is elevated, and it continues to play a pivotal role in influencing economic policy for the benefit of WA businesses and the broader economy.
The role reports to the Chief Executive Officer and oversees the following functions:
- Policy
- Media and Government relations
- Economics
Key Responsibilities
- Actively strengthen CCIWA’s position as Western Australia’s leading and most influential business voice.
- Build and nurture strategic networks across government, business, media, and among CCIWA members, Ministers, officials, and Members of Parliament to secure commitment to policy and advocacy priorities.
- Serve as CCIWA’s spokesperson at conferences, public forums, and speaking engagements, ensuring the organisation’s perspectives are clearly and compellingly represented.
- Deliver timely economic insights and analysis to members through publications and social media, keeping businesses informed of contemporary and emerging issues.
- Lead the development and execution of CCIWA’s policy agenda and advocacy strategies.
- Conduct strategic analysis and modelling of economic data, using these insights to inform and influence positive change for Western Australian businesses.
Competencies and Experience
- Strategic Leadership and Influence: Proven leadership in the development and strategic direction of policy agendas and advocacy efforts.
- Economic Analysis and Advocacy: Extensive senior-level experience in interpreting and modelling economic data, delivering actionable insights through publications and social media.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Proven track record of building strong networks across government, business, media, as well as influencing decision-makers such as Ministers, officials, and Members of Parliament.
- Public Representation and Communication: Skilled spokesperson with exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, adept at presenting at conferences, public forums, and in media interviews to clearly articulate organisational perspectives.
- Policy Development: Experienced in leading the creation and execution of policy and advocacy strategies, as well as collaborating with stakeholders to develop opportunities aligned with CCIWA’s mission.
- Adaptability and Emotional Intelligence: Highly flexible in fast-paced, issue-rich environments, with strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to foster collaboration and high performance.
- Critical Thinking and Commercial Acumen: Strategic and analytical thinker with robust financial and commercial acumen, enabling effective decision-making and the achievement of positive outcomes for Western Australian businesses.
Training / Qualifications / Licences Required
- Bachelor’s degree in business, commerce, economics or related field
- Post-tertiary qualification in relevant field desirable
- Police Clearance
- Drivers Licence
