Economics on the Swan
The ESAWA hosted a successful breakfast on 11 March 2025 with the first in a new series of events titled Economics on the Swan. The Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP was keynote speaker and addressed the topic "Why Competition Reform Is More Fun Than It Looks – and More Significant Than You Thought". The presentation focussed on the competition challenges facing the Australian economy, and how larger datasets, better econometric techniques and updated theories have provided new insights on market concentration and the relationship between competition and productivity. Dr Leigh is Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities, Treasury and Employment. Before being elected in 2010, he was professor of economics at the Australian National University, and he comments regularly at functions and in the media on economic and public policy issues.
